Welcome to the CERN Public Interactive Service
!
The PLUS service (Public Login User Service) is the interactive
logon service to Linux for all CERN users.
The cluster LXPLUS consists of public machines provided by the
IT Department for interactive work.
Since end of September 2008, it is possible to evaluate the SLC5 operating system by connecting to the alias lx64slc5. Batch jobs submitted from these machines will be executed on batch nodes with the same architecture.
Very limited 32bit SLC4 resources are still available under the alias
lx32slc4.cern.ch. Jobs which have been submitted from these machines
will be run on 32bit SLC4 machines, unless a different execution
host type has been explicitly requested using the -R option of the
bsub command. Please don't use this architecture any more unless you really need it.
For all supported architectures, there are pre-production machines
available which receive new linux updates at least one week before
deployment.
See "More
on 64bit lxplus" to learn more about using 64bit lxplus nodes
to learn how you can use the GRID on LXPLUS
All nodes run a common user environment and directory services.
See "Login &
Environment"
for a description of your login environment.
See "CERN Linux SLC4"
to learn more about SLC4 on LXPLUS/LXBATCH
A powerful batch system is serving CPU power to the interactive
machines.
See "Batch
Computing"
for a kick-start description of or batch system.
As the cluster is visible to the outside, certain securiy rules
apply.
See "Security"
for related issues.
| Note on Private use of CERN
computing facilities |
The Operational
Circular No. 5 states that CERN provides computing
facilities ONLY for professional duties as defined by the
user's divisional hierarchy.
However, personal use of computing facilities is tolerated
provided:
- it is in compliance with the Operational Circular
No. 5 and not detrimental to official duties, including
those of other users
- the frequency and duration is limited and there is a
negligible use of CERN resources (incl. printers etc.)
- it does not constitute a political, commercial and/or
profit-making activity
- it is not inappropriate or offensive
- it does not violate applicable laws
The Circular provides that the Director General shall have
discretion in deciding whether these conditions are met.
Users of CERN computing facilities are hereby informed
that the consultation of pornographic web sites through
CERN computing facilities (including the network) is not
appropriate.
Furthermore, they are reminded that consultation
of web sites containing illicit materials (in particular
relating to pedophilia or inciting to violence, discrimination
and racism) is in violation of applicable laws in CERN's
Host States. Such consultations are therefore strictly forbidden. |
